Betio, situated on Betio Islet at the southwestern end of South Tarawa in Kiribati, serves as the nation's primary port town and commercial hub, housing the main harbor for copra processing and tuna exports amid a densely populated urban strip connected by causeways.

Renowned for its pivotal role in the brutal 1943 Battle of Tarawa during World War II, where U.S. Marines captured it from Japanese forces at great cost, the islet retains numerous relics like gun emplacements, bunkers, and shipwrecks that attract history enthusiasts despite overcrowding challenges.

With around 15,000 residents in a compact 154 hectares, it features key facilities including the High Court and fish processing plants, though it grapples with high population density, limited sanitation, and vulnerability to rising seas in this low-lying atoll setting.​
