Amarbaysgalant Monastery

Selenge Province (North Central), Mongolia

---

Amarbayasgalant Monastery, located in Selenge Province at the foot of Mount Büren-Khaan, is one of the three largest and most important Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia.

Built between 1727 and 1736 in honor of Zanabazar, Mongolia’s first Buddhist spiritual leader, it is renowned for its beautiful blend of Mongolian, Tibetan, and Chinese architectural styles. Set in a peaceful valley near the Selenge River, the monastery was once home to thousands of monks and dozens of temples.

Unlike many religious sites in Mongolia, much of the complex survived the communist purges of the 1930s, and later restoration efforts helped preserve its historic buildings and spiritual significance. Today, Amarbayasgalant Monastery remains an active place of worship and a major cultural landmark, attracting visitors with its rich history, impressive architecture, valuable Buddhist artifacts, and serene natural surroundings.
