Manzushir Monastery is a historic Buddhist monastery located on the southern slopes of Bogd Khan Uul National Park, near the town of Zuunmod and about 45 kilometers south of Ulaanbaatar. Founded in 1733, it was once one of Mongolia’s major religious centers, with numerous temples and hundreds of monks. Much of the monastery was destroyed during the communist purges of the 1930s, but its ruins, restored temple, and small museum remain important cultural and historical attractions. Visitors can see religious artifacts, old photographs, rock carvings, and a massive bronze cauldron that was once used to prepare meals for large numbers of monks. Surrounded by forests, rocky hills, and scenic hiking trails, Manzushir Monastery combines natural beauty with spiritual heritage, making it a popular destination for those interested in Mongolia’s Buddhist history and outdoor landscapes.
