Blue Stone Castle
Modrý Kameň, Slovakia, Slovakia
Blue Stone Castle (Modrý Kameň Castle) in Modrý Kameň, Slovakia, is a 13th-century Gothic fortress built on a rocky pinnacle above the town, first mentioned as Keykkw ("Blue rock") in 1290. Constructed by ancestors of the Balassa family and rebuilt by King Béla IV as an anti-Turkish stronghold in the Danube Defense Zone, it was captured by Ottomans in 1576, destroyed in 1593, and restored by Sigismund Balassa before repeated 17th-century ravages left it ruined. The Balassas then built a Baroque mansion nearby using castle stones, creating a preserved complex now housing a museum amid its dramatic hilltop ruins.
