BOTANICO LA CORTIJUELA Garden
Spain, Spain
La Cortijuela Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico de la Cortijuela) is a high-mountain botanical site in the municipality of Monachil, within the Sierra Nevada National Park in the province of Granada, Spain, situated on the slopes of Cerro del Trevenque at about 1,600 metres above sea level.
Covering roughly 12 hectares, it is managed by the regional government of Andalusia together with the University of Granada and forms part of the Andalusian Network of Botanical and Mycological Gardens in protected natural areas. The garden focuses on the protection, conservation, and study of the unique flora of Sierra Nevada, including more than 60 endemic species that represent a very high proportion of Europe’s mountain endemism, while also serving as an outdoor educational space for understanding these ecosystems.
Visitors experience a signed botanical trail through a mixed forest of pines and holm oaks, small patches of deciduous woodland with oaks and maples, rich undergrowth with shrubs and herbs such as orchids and aromatic sages, and riparian zones along streams lined with elms, willows, and birches.
