Budatín Castle
Žilina, Slovakia, Slovakia
Budatín Castle in Žilina, Slovakia, was constructed in the mid-13th century as a royal water castle guarding trade routes and tolls at the Váh and Kysuca rivers' confluence, featuring a massive four-story cylindrical Romanesque tower—the oldest part—from the early Gothic period, originally ringed by timber defenses, a moat, and drawbridge.
Fortified under Matthew Csák in the 14th century with stone walls and palaces, it saw Renaissance rebuilds in 1551 under the Suňog family, including interiors and bastions against Turkish threats, before Thököly's forces burned it in 1684.
The 18th-century Čáky owners added a Baroque-Classicist manor that largely burned in 1849, leading to 1920s revivalist reconstruction preserving the tower amid later nationalization; today it hosts Považské Museum exhibits on regional history.
