Verified Castello Scaligero di Malcesine

Malcesine, Italy, Italy

Castello Scaligero di Malcesine is a striking medieval castle perched on a rocky promontory overlooking Lake Garda in the town of Malcesine.

Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages, and over the centuries it was controlled by various powers, including the Lombards, Franks, Scaliger family, Venetians, French, and Austrians. The castle is best known for the major fortifications carried out by the Scaliger family in the 13th century, which gave the fortress much of its present appearance.

Thanks to its strategic location, it played an important role in controlling movement and trade along Lake Garda. The fortress features impressive walls, a tall keep, panoramic terraces, and historic rooms. It also became famous through the writings and sketches of the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited the site during his travels in Italy.

Today, Castello Scaligero is one of Lake Garda’s most iconic landmarks. It houses museums dedicated to local natural history and culture, while its tower offers spectacular views of the lake, mountains, and surrounding countryside.
