Castillo de la Tobaruela
Spain, Spain
Castillo de la Tobaruela is a 15th-century fortress near Linares in Jaén province, Spain, built by Alonso Sánchez de Carvajal on the ruins of an earlier Andalusian castle amid noble rivalries with families like the Benavides.
The Reyes Católicos halted its construction in 1475 to curb noble power, though work quietly continued, creating a compact palace-fortress blending military strength with Renaissance style, later declared a National Monument in 1985.
Passed through Carvajal heirs and affected by 19th-century lordship abolitions, it survives today as a private rural property in good condition.
