Castle Jasenov
Jasenov, Humenné District, Slovakia, Slovakia
Castle Jasenov in Jasenov, Humenné District, Slovakia, is a 13th-century Gothic castle ruin built by the Peteny noble family at the turn of the 13th-14th centuries to guard vital trade routes from southern Slovakia northward through the Humenské vrchy Mountains. Confiscated from the disloyal Peteny family, it was granted to the Italian-origin Drugeth family in 1317 by King Charles I, who expanded it in the 15th-16th centuries with a rounded cannon tower, multi-layered outer walls featuring shooting holes, and bastions against Turkish threats. Famously associated with 16th-century coin forgery operations leading to Master Mikuláš's execution, it was conquered and destroyed in 1644 by George I Rákóczi's anti-Habsburg forces, with partial early 20th-century conservation preserving its upper castle, Renaissance gate, and walls today.
