Castle of Dobrá Voda
Dobrá Voda, Trnava District, Slovakia, Slovakia
Castle of Dobrá Voda is a Gothic castle ruin towering above the village of Dobrá Voda in Slovakia's Trnava District, built in the 1260s to early 14th century by Aba from the Abov family to guard trade routes along the Little Carpathians ridge from Hungary to Moravia. It changed hands through noble families like Matthew III Csák, Stibor of Stiboricz, the Országhs, and Erdődys, with expansions including cannon bastions, outer wards, and a southern economic complex in the 15th-17th centuries to counter Ottoman threats and rebellions. Damaged in Rákóczi's uprising around 1703 and destroyed by fire in 1762 after a lightning strike, the overgrown remnants of walls, towers, and fortifications now offer a short, scenic hike amid the Dobrovodský karst landscape.
