Castle Súľov near Súľov-Hradná in northwestern Slovakia is one of the country's smallest and most inaccessible medieval fortresses, built into dramatic rock formations at 660 meters elevation in the first third of the 15th century, possibly by Hussites, primarily to guard nearby trade roads. Featuring an upper and lower castle connected by a rock-hewn tunnel corridor, rock-cut water cistern, observatory, armory, and stable, it was rebuilt after a 1550 fire and housed a military garrison until 1730 before severe earthquakes in 1763 and 1858 accelerated its ruin. First documented in 1470 when King Matthias Corvinus permitted fortifications, its weathered remnants embedded in Súľov Rocks now draw hikers via educational trails amid stunning cliffs.
