Château de Carrouges
Carrouges, France, France
The Château de Carrouges is a striking 14th- to 17th-century fortress in the village of Carrouges, Orne department, Normandy, France, blending austere medieval defenses with elegant Renaissance living quarters.
Originally built amid the Hundred Years' War by Jean Blosset after English destruction, it features a rectangular moated layout with a 14th-century donjon tower, Louis XII-style gatehouse of red and black bricks, and later Henri IV/Louis XIII additions like grand apartments by the Le Veneur family, who owned it until 1936.
Now managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, its brick, granite, and slate structure houses period furnishings, a unique European hunting collection, and manicured parklands, welcoming visitors for guided tours.
