Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, France
Château Médiéval de Roquebrune is a 10th-century fortress in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on France's Côte d'Azur, built by Count Conrad I of Ventimiglia as a donjon to defend against Saracen raids, originally enclosing the entire medieval village within its walls.
One of France's oldest surviving Carolingian structures, it features thick stone ramparts up to 4 meters wide, machicolations, arrow slits, and a 26-meter-high tower on a puddingstone rock offering panoramic views of Monaco, the Mediterranean, and Cap Martin.
Controlled by Genoa until 1395 then the Grimaldi family of Monaco until 1861, it later served as a prison before being donated to the town in 1921 and classified as a historic monument.
