Château de Ranrouët
Herbignac, France
Château de Ranrouët in Herbignac, France, is a historic castle dating back to the 12th century, built initially as a wooden tower and later replaced by a stone fortress in the 13th century.
It served as a strategic defense, guarding access to the Guérande peninsula and controlling important trade routes, particularly those related to the salt marshes of Guérande.
Over the centuries, its successive owners—including the Assérac, Rochefort, and Rieux families—expanded and modified the castle to adapt to changing military needs, adding moats, star-shaped bastions, and gun terraces. The castle was dismantled in the 17th century by order of King Louis XIII and later damaged during the French Revolution.
Today, the ruins stand as a significant cultural site, with ongoing restoration and various events held there, offering visitors insight into its rich medieval and Renaissance history within a scenic setting.
