Combourg Castle
Combourg, France, France
Combourg Castle is a medieval fortress built around 1025 by Archbishop Guinguené of Dol in the town of Combourg, Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, France, rising on a hill beside the serene Lac Tranquille.
Constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries with grand round towers and machicolations, it defended Brittany's marches during conflicts like the Hundred Years' War, passing through noble lines before the Chateaubriand family acquired it in 1761.
Immortalized by writer François-René de Chateaubriand, who spent his childhood there and dubbed it the "birthplace of Romanticism" in his Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe, the castle was ravaged in the Revolution but restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc's pupil in neo-Gothic style.
Still partly inhabited by Chateaubriand descendants, its 25-hectare park, curtain walls, and interiors welcome guided tours, blending history from medieval defense to literary legend.
