Conches-en-Ouche Castle
Conches-en-Ouche, France
Conches-en-Ouche Castle in France dates back to 1034 and was built by the Norman noble Roger I of Tosny, who was noted for his military exploits in Spain.
The castle played a major role in maintaining control during local civil conflicts after the death of the Duke of Normandy and was involved in frequent battles during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France.
The castle changed hands multiple times, enduring capture by English forces in 1364 and recapture by the French in 1371, ultimately remaining under French control from 1449 onward. It was later used as a refuge during the French Wars of Religion but was demolished soon after due to concerns about its potential use against the monarchy. Today, the most prominent remnant is the large keep built in 1363, which stands tall with impressively thick walls and three stories, and the castle grounds now serve as a public park while some buildings house the local library and town hall.
The site is a classified historic monument and offers a glimpse into nearly a millennium of regional history and medieval military architecture.
