Dievčí hrad
Iža, Slovakia, Slovakia
Dievčí hrad, known as "Girl's Castle," is the local name for the ruins of the ancient Roman fort Celemantia in the village of Iža near Komárno, southern Slovakia, constructed in the 2nd century AD during Emperor Marcus Aurelius's reign as a key frontier outpost of the Limes Romanus defense system opposite the legionary camp at Brigetio. Initially built as an earth-and-timber camp around 174-175 AD amid the Marcomannic Wars to monitor Quadi movements, it was destroyed by Germanic raids in 179 AD, then rebuilt in stone under Emperor Commodus with features like double-towered gates, a central principia headquarters, barracks, and a riverside walkway linking to the Danube. Abandoned around 400 AD, the site reveals excavated foundations, walls, and artifacts like coins and stamps from Legio I Adiutrix, now a protected monument with informational panels offering insight into Roman military life in the region.
