Dorëzi Castle, or Kalaja e Dorëzit, is an ancient hill fortress located near the village of Dorëz, about 20 kilometers southwest of Tirana and five kilometers east of Pezë.

Perched 479 meters above sea level, it is among the oldest fortifications in central Albania, dating back to the 9th century BC. Archaeological studies indicate that the site developed through several construction phases, beginning with primitive stone walls built by Illyrian and pre-Illyrian peoples, followed by more sophisticated Hellenistic structures made of carved blocks, and later Roman and Byzantine reconstructions using mortar between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.

Strategically positioned, the castle once controlled a key ancient road connecting Durrës with the Erzen and Shkumbin valleys, extending toward Macedonia, making it vital for trade and defense. Excavations have uncovered pottery fragments and structural remains suggesting continuous habitation for over a millennium.

Thought to be the site of the ancient city Dimale by some researchers, Dorëzi Castle stands as a significant example of early urbanization in the Illyrian world. Though now in ruins and difficult to access, it remains a remarkable archaeological monument and one of Tirana County’s most ancient historical landmarks.
