Dubingiai Castle
Dubingiai, Lithuania, Lithuania
Dubingiai Castle is a historic castle site in northeastern Lithuania, located on a peninsula in Lake Asveja that was once an island.
First mentioned in written sources in the 14th century, it became an important defensive stronghold when Grand Duke Vytautas built a castle there in the early 15th century to help protect the route to Vilnius. The castle later became one of the principal residences of the powerful Radziwiłł (Radvila) family, who transformed it into an impressive Renaissance palace and family center.
It was closely linked to major figures in Lithuanian and Polish history, including Barbara Radziwiłł, who lived there after her marriage to King Sigismund II Augustus. The castle declined after wars and political changes in the 17th century, and today only archaeological remains survive. Excavations have uncovered the foundations of the palace and church, as well as the burial site of several members of the Radziwiłł family, making Dubingiai one of Lithuania’s most important historical and cultural heritage sites.
