Elbasan Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a historic fortress located in the city of Elbasan, Albania. Originally constructed in the 15th century by the Ottoman Turks in 1466, the castle was built upon much older Roman and Byzantine foundations that date back to the 3rd and 4th centuries.

The castle was strategically positioned along the historic Roman road Via Egnatia, a vital trade and military route. The fortress initially had 26 equidistant towers standing around 9 meters high, with strong walls forming a rectangular shape. It served as a military stronghold and refuge during the Ottoman era and played a significant role in Albania’s history, especially during periods of resistance and cultural preservation.

Within the castle walls are notable attractions like Sinan Pasha’s early 19th-century Turkish bath and the Orthodox Church of St. Mary’s Assumption. Elbasan Castle also preserves architectural features from multiple eras, blending Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences. Today, it is open to the public, offering panoramic views of the city and standing as a testament to Elbasan’s layered history.
