Ennedi Plateau (Ennedi Massif)

Ennedi Region, Chad

---

The Ennedi Plateau, also known as the Ennedi Massif, is a vast sandstone highland in northeastern Chad renowned for its spectacular desert scenery.

Over thousands of years, wind and water erosion have carved the landscape into dramatic canyons, cliffs, rock towers, natural arches, and deep valleys, creating some of the most striking rock formations in the Sahara Desert. The plateau is also famous for its rich cultural heritage, containing one of the largest collections of prehistoric rock art in the Sahara.

Thousands of paintings and engravings, some dating back around 7,000 years, depict animals, cattle, and human life, offering valuable insights into a time when the region was much greener and supported larger populations. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, the Ennedi Massif combines exceptional natural beauty with archaeological and ecological importance. Its desert pools, wildlife habitats, and ancient cultural sites make it one of the most remarkable landscapes in Africa.
