Tibesti Mountains

Northern Chad (Borkou-Tibesti Region), Chad

---

The Tibesti Mountains, located in northern Chad and extending into southern Libya, form the largest and highest mountain range in the Sahara Desert.

This rugged volcanic landscape is dominated by dramatic peaks, deep canyons, lava fields, oases, and ancient volcanoes, including Emi Koussi, the highest mountain in both Chad and the Sahara. The range has been shaped by volcanic activity and erosion over millions of years, creating striking natural features such as volcanic craters, hot springs, and sandstone valleys.

Despite the harsh desert environment, the mountains support scattered vegetation, wildlife, and communities of the Toubou people, who have adapted to life in this remote region. Known for their spectacular scenery and isolation, the Tibesti Mountains are one of Africa’s most remarkable desert landscapes. Their unique geology, cultural heritage, and status as the “roof of the Sahara” make them one of Chad’s most important natural landmarks.
