Fiľakovo Castle
Fiľakovo, Slovakia, Slovakia
Fiľakovo Castle is a prominent medieval ruin perched on a volcanic rock outcrop at 242 meters above sea level in the town of Fiľakovo, southern Slovakia, dominating the landscape since its first mention in 1241. Originally a simple stone stronghold built after Mongol invasions, it evolved through Gothic, Renaissance, and early modern fortifications, including massive pentagonal bastions like the Bebek and Perényi towers, a semi-circular cannon bastion, and terraced wards to defend against Turkish incursions, which captured it in 1554. Repeatedly rebuilt amid wars and fires, including damage from Thököly’s forces in 1682, it fell into ruin thereafter but now features a museum in the restored Bebek Tower, ongoing conservation since 1972, and a didactic trail exploring its history and geology.
