Fortress Komárno in Komárno, Slovakia, is the largest and best-preserved bastion fortification system in Slovakia and the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, built at the Danube-Váh rivers confluence to halt Turkish advances after their 1526 victory at Mohács. Construction began in the 16th century with the Old Fortress replacing a medieval castle, followed by the New Fortress (1663-1673) connected via moats and gates like Ferdinand and Leopold, featuring five bastions each, casemates, and moats that repelled 100,000 Ottoman troops in 1594. Expanded in the 19th century under Napoleonic influence into the Palatine and Váh Lines with additional forts like Monostor, it played key roles in the 1848-1849 Hungarian Revolution before serving as barracks until 2003, now a national cultural monument.
