Gazimağusa Kalesi
Famagusta, Cyprus
Gazimağusa Kalesi, commonly known as Othello Castle, is a medieval fortress in Famagusta, Cyprus, built by the Lusignan Kingdom of Cyprus in the 14th century to protect the city's important harbor and serve as a key defensive stronghold.
The castle was later strengthened by the Republic of Venice, which replaced its square towers with circular ones better suited for artillery and added the famous Lion of Saint Mark above the entrance. These modifications helped make Famagusta one of the Mediterranean’s most heavily fortified port cities.
Today, the fortress is best known for its association with William Shakespeare's play Othello, from which it takes its modern name. Visitors can explore its towers, courtyards, and historic defenses while learning about the centuries of Lusignan, Venetian, and Ottoman history that shaped the city.
