Kantara Castle is a medieval fortress perched high in the Kyrenia Mountains of Cyprus.

Believed to have Byzantine origins, it was built as part of a chain of mountain strongholds that included Buffavento Castle and Saint Hilarion Castle, allowing defenders to relay warning signals across the island and watch for pirate or enemy attacks. The castle played an important role during the medieval period and changed hands between the Byzantines, Richard the Lionheart, the Knights Templar, and the Lusignan rulers of Cyprus.

Over time, it was expanded and used as a military outpost, administrative center, prison, and lookout fortress. Although it was abandoned in the 16th century and now stands in ruins, Kantara Castle remains one of Cyprus’s most impressive historic sites. Visitors are drawn by its dramatic setting, medieval architecture, and breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline, the Mesaoria Plain, and the Karpas Peninsula.
