Gelnica Castle

Gelnica, Slovakia, Slovakia

Gelnica Castle is a 13th-century ruin perched on a forested rocky outcrop above the historic mining town of Gelnica in eastern Slovakia's Spiš region, built around 1234 under King Andrew II to protect local mines and the town from invasions. The oval-shaped fortress, featuring thick perimeter walls, a multi-story residential tower with gunports and buttresses, and multiple courtyards, endured Tatar raids, sieges by rebels like Roland in 1274, and Hussite conflicts before major destruction in 1527 during throne disputes. Rebuilt by nobleman Alexej Thurzo, it later served as a military training site until materials were repurposed for town buildings, leaving mainly wall remnants and a prominent tower base accessible today via short hikes from the Mining Museum.
