It is known for its Cape Dutch-style mansion, gardens, and links to major moments in South African history, including the Groote Schuur Minute signed by Nelson Mandela and F. W. de Klerk in 1990. The estate also includes parts of the University of Cape Town and is closely associated with Groote Schuur Hospital, where the world’s first human heart transplant was performed in 1967.
