It was built as a residence for Willem Cornelis Boers, a high-ranking official of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), around 1777–1778. The house's architecture reflects the impressive influence of European styles, notably featuring a rococo fanlight at the entrance, Corinthian columns, and a spacious layout with lounges, bedrooms, and gardens.

Over the centuries, it served various roles, including a residence, a teachers' training college, and a high school. It was also the favorite dwelling of governors, including Lord Charles Somerset. Today, it is a heritage site and a museum that houses the William Fehr Collection of pictorial Africana, offering visitors a glimpse into Cape Town’s 18th-century history and architecture. Its charming gardens and captivating architecture make it a notable cultural landmark in Cape Town .
