The High Tatras, located in northern Slovakia in the Prešov Region, are the country’s highest mountain range and part of the Tatra Mountains along the border with Poland. Known for their dramatic peaks, crystal-clear alpine lakes, waterfalls, and scenic valleys, they are one of Central Europe’s most spectacular natural destinations. The region is protected by Tatra National Park (TANAP), Slovakia’s oldest national park, which is home to diverse wildlife including bears, marmots, eagles, and the rare Tatra chamois. The mountains also contain Gerlachovský štít, the highest peak in Slovakia at 2,655 meters. Popular year-round for hiking, skiing, mountain tourism, and nature observation, the High Tatras attract visitors with their stunning landscapes, outdoor activities, and charming resort towns such as Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec, and Tatranská Lomnica.
