Hrad Gemer
Gemer, Slovakia, Slovakia
Hrad Gemer, or Gemerský hrad, is the ruin of a 12th-century royal castle overlooking the village of Gemer in central Slovakia's Rimava Valley, rebuilt after the 1241 Tatar invasion to serve as the administrative center for the Gemer region and county. It played a key role in local feudalization under King Béla IV before passing into private hands, only to revert to royal control by the late 14th century amid dynastic struggles. Captured by Jan Jiskra's forces in the mid-15th century, it was later seized by King Matthias Corvinus, who ordered its demolition in 1458, leaving scant remnants of walls and foundations scattered on the hilltop today.
