Huebro
Spain, Spain
Huebro is a tiny historic hamlet in Níjar municipality, Almería province, Andalusia, Spain, possibly the area's earliest settlement with roots in Al-Andalus, where its Arabic-derived name and traditional irrigation farming thrived for centuries around the vital spring of La Zanja.
Featuring 19 preserved norias along a 3-km watercourse dropping 400 meters through the valley—regulated by ancient Ordenanzas del Valle de Huebro—it functioned as an independent municipality until merging with Níjar in 1860 after depopulation from the 1568-1570 Morisco War, with repopulation delayed until the 18th century under Carlos III.
Today home to just 26-27 residents amid lead mines like Laízquez and the scenic Sierra Alhamilla, it offers peaceful hiking, cultural heritage, and remnants of its Arab engineering legacy.
