Verified Jardi Botanic Historic

Barcelona, Spain, Spain

Jardí Botànic Històric (Historic Botanical Garden) is a small, secluded botanical garden on Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, laid out inside two old stone quarries near the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.

Created around 1930 by botanist Pius Font i Quer after the 1929 International Exhibition, it functioned as the city’s original botanical garden, later closed in the 1980s during works for the 1992 Olympics and reopened in 2003 as a “historic” garden distinct from the newer Jardí Botànic de Barcelona.

Designed in the style of a romantic English garden, it features shaded, cooler hollows with temperatures several degrees lower than the surroundings, allowing tall trees and many non‑Mediterranean and exotic plants to thrive alongside Mediterranean and medicinal plots.

Today it is a quiet, free‑entry green oasis with paths, a waterfall, a traditional farmhouse, and collections used for research and the conservation of endemic, exotic, and endangered species, largely overlooked by most tourists despite its central location behind the MNAC.
