Kalaja e Dajtit
Shëngjin i Vogël, Albania
Kalaja e Dajtit is a historic fortress located on the western side of Mount Dajti near Tirana, Albania.
It sits at an altitude of about 1,200 meters and covers an area of roughly 1.12 hectares, mostly on steep terrain shaped like a triangular pyramid with two peaks. The castle likely has origins in late antiquity, built over Illyrian foundations and later expanded by Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans.
Its strategic position allowed control over the Erzen river valley and served as a fortified settlement providing refuge during turbulent times.
The fortress includes thick walls made of local stone linked by lime mortar and housed dwellings inside, showing it was used both as military defense and habitation. The site was discovered in 1963, declared a cultural monument, and has undergone restoration efforts. Today, Kalaja e Dajtit stands as a symbol of Albania’s layered historical heritage and resilience.
