Kalaja e Këlcyrës
Këlcyrë, Albania
Kalaja e Këlcyrës, or Këlcyrë Castle, is an ancient fortress located near the town of Këlcyrë in southern Albania, overlooking the scenic Vjosa River Gorge.
The castle dates back to the 3rd or 4th century BC and was originally established by Illyrian tribes who recognized the area’s strategic importance as a mountain passage linking Epirus and central Albania. In the 13th century, a fortified structure was rebuilt to guard the Klisura Pass, which later became significant during battles between Macedonian, Roman, and Byzantine forces.
During the medieval period, the fortress was part of the Kingdom of Albania and controlled by the noble Muzaka family, serving as both a defensive bastion and a regional administrative center. It was captured by the Byzantines in the 14th century and later fell under Ottoman rule.
The area surrounding the castle gained further prominence in the 20th century during the Greco-Italian War when the Battle of the Klisura Pass took place nearby. Today, Kalaja e Këlcyrës stands in partial ruins but retains portions of its ancient stone walls and offers breathtaking views of the Këlcyrë Gorge, making it a notable historical and natural landmark that reflects Albania’s layered past from Illyrian times through modern history.
