Kalaja e Peqinit
Peqin, Albania
Kalaja e Peqinit, or Peqin Castle, is a historic fortress located in Peqin, Albania, with foundations dating back to the Roman period during the construction of the Via Egnatia road.
The castle once featured walls up to 12 meters high and served a strategic role in controlling the region. During the Ottoman era, the castle was expanded and included a palace and harem controlled by local lords known as the Sipahi, with the last known resident being Demir Pasha.
Notably, the castle was equipped with underground tunnels and clay pipes that likely supplied water from outside sources during sieges. The 17th-century Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi described the castle as housing soldiers, cannons, and a small mosque without a minaret.
Today, the ruins of Peqin Castle stand as a testament to its long military and administrative history along an important historic route in Albania.
