Kardhiq Castle
Kardhiq, Albania
Kardhiq Castle is a historic hill fortress located in Kardhiq, a village in southern Albania's Gjirokastër district.
It was built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries by the noble Albanian Zenebishi family as a fortified garrison, serving to control vital trade routes crossing the mountainous region.
The castle features a pentagonal wall roughly 80 meters long with five corner towers, two of which have a distinctive polygonal design similar to other fortifications attributed to Ali Pasha Tepelena, who restored it in the early 19th century after a siege.
The walls are about 1.7 meters thick and include turrets, while the castle itself stands prominently overlooking the surrounding agricultural plains. Though much of the structure is now in ruins, the fortress remains an important cultural monument reflecting the layered history and strategic significance of the region through medieval to Ottoman periods.
