Kasteel Van Rivieren

Aarschot, Belgium, Belgium

Kasteel van Rivieren is a historic castle and estate in Gelrode, a village within the municipality of Aarschot in Flemish Brabant, Belgium, celebrated for its mix of medieval origins and a late‑19th‑century eclectical building set within a romantic landscape park of about 5–5.5 hectares. The name “Rivieren” comes from the medieval Lords of Rivieren, first mentioned in 1197 and closely related to the noble family of Aarschot; the original site was a fortified, moated residence with an upper and lower court, of which only the foundations of the old donjon (keep) remain today in the park. The present castle, built around the end of the 19th century after the medieval complex was largely destroyed in 1866, is a modest but elegant eclectical structure of two storeys and a basement with a complex roofline and two flanking three‑storey tower volumes at the main southern entrance, and it is now surrounded by a park laid out in landscape style since about 1880, featuring characteristic brown beeches arranged in the local “twelve apostles” formation and linked to the nearby natural area of Vorsdonkbos‑Turfputten and the river Demer. The ensemble has been protected as immovable heritage since 2014, and the castle and park are used today as a private residence and event venue, with restoration work in recent years aimed at returning the building and gardens to their former glory and occasionally opening the site for special events rather than regular public tourism. It is important to distinguish this Aarschot castle from the better‑known Château de Rivieren (Kasteel de Rivieren) in Ganshoren, near Brussels, which is a different medieval feudal castle with its own 10‑hectare park and 1983 classification; the Kasteel van Rivieren in Aarschot is a younger, eclectical building on a much older medieval site but without the same long continuous medieval architecture as the Ganshoren example.
