Kasteel Van Laken

Brussels, Belgium, Belgium

Kasteel van Laken (Château de Laeken, Palace of Laeken) is the main private residence of the Belgian king and royal family, located in the Laeken/Laken district of northern Brussels, and it forms the heart of a large royal estate of about 186 hectares that includes gardens, greenhouses, pavilions and stables, all set within an English‑style landscape park. The palace itself was built between 1782 and 1784 in a sober neoclassical style by the French architect Charles de Wailly, with supervision by Louis Montoyer, originally as a summer residence for the Austrian governors of the Netherlands, the archduchess Maria Christina and her husband Albert of Saxe‑Teschen, after which it passed to Napoleon, then to the Dutch king William I, and finally to the Belgian monarchy after independence in 1830, becoming the main residential palace under Leopold II and remaining the family home of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde since 1999. Unlike the more formal Royal Palace of Brussels, which is used for official ceremonies, the Kasteel van Laken has a quieter, more intimate character and is primarily a private home, though it also hosts important state functions and is surrounded by the famous Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, which are opened to the public for a few weeks each spring, while the rest of the palace, gardens and stables (including the Chinese Pavilion and Japanese Tower from Leopold II’s collection) remain closed to ordinary visitors.
