Kežmarok Castle
Kežmarok, Slovakia, Slovakia
Kežmarok Castle in Kežmarok, Slovakia, is a well-preserved town castle first mentioned in 1463, built by Imrich and Ján Zápoľský in Gothic style on the site of a medieval church dedicated to St. Elisabeth, using its materials for construction. It features thick defensive walls, massive bastions, cylindrical towers, a quadrilateral gate tower, and an irregular elliptical layout integrated with the town's fortifications, later enhanced by a dry moat and drawbridge. Rebuilt extensively in Renaissance style during 1572–1624 under Šebastián Thököly, who brought Italian artisans, it gained arcaded courtyards, sgraffito ornaments, murals in halls, and an Early Baroque chapel in a former tower. Today, it houses a museum showcasing regional history, crafts, and Spiš artifacts.
