Khongor Sand Dune, also known as Khongoryn Els or the “Singing Sands,” is one of the most famous natural attractions in the Gobi Desert in Umnugovi Province, Mongolia.

The vast dune system stretches for roughly 100 to 180 kilometers and features towering golden sand hills that can rise up to around 300 meters, creating a dramatic desert landscape. The dunes are known for the deep humming or roaring sounds produced when wind moves the sand or when sand slides down the slopes, giving them their “singing” nickname.

Their colors change throughout the day, ranging from pale yellow to rich golden and reddish tones depending on the sunlight. A small oasis formed by the Khonggoryn Gol river runs along the edge of the dunes, providing a striking contrast between green vegetation and the surrounding desert. Visitors often enjoy climbing the dunes, riding Bactrian camels, photographing the spectacular scenery, and experiencing the traditional lifestyle of local nomadic herders.
