Koitere
Finland, Finland
Koitere is a large, pristine wilderness lake located in Ilomantsi municipality in North Karelia, eastern Finland, often called "The Pearl of North Karelia" and recognized as one of the seven wonders of Finland selected by the Finnish Tourist Association and Finnair in 1973. The lake covers a vast area in the middle of untouched wilderness and features an impressive 451 islands along with many beaches, creating a spectacular natural landscape that attracts nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The river Koitajoki, a tributary of the Pielisjoki River, flows from Koitere, and the lake is most famous for excellent fishing, particularly for zander and European perch. Koitere Island, one of the approximately 100 islands in the lake, is a stunning 19-acre private island in the heart of the North Karelian Biosphere Reserve, offering privacy and tranquility with luxury villas being built by the lake. The area near Koitere also includes attractions like the nearby Koli and Patvinsuo National Parks, the Polvikoski rapids on the Koitajoki River, and the European Union's easternmost point where travelers can see the Russian border pole up close. The region is perfect for summer activities like fishing, boating, canoeing, and hiking, as well as winter activities including skiing and snowmobiling, making it a year-round destination for authentic Finnish nature experiences. Interestingly, Koitere Lacus, one of the apparent methane lakes on Saturn's moon Titan, was named after this lake.
