Kreva Castle
Kreva, Belarus
Kreva Castle in Belarus, built in the 14th century, is considered the first all-stone castle in the country. It was a major fortified residence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania rulers, including Gediminas and Algirdas. The castle is notable for its thick stone walls and two main towers, with the larger "Princely Tower" serving as both residence and defense.
Important historical events include the imprisonment and mysterious death of Kęstutis and the signing of the Union of Krewo in 1385, marking a significant alliance between Lithuania and Poland. The castle was damaged by Crimean Tatar raids and in World War I, when it served as a defensive line and suffered heavy artillery shelling.
Today, only ruins remain, but restoration efforts have been ongoing since 2017 to conserve the walls, towers, and historic gates. The site is a popular tourist attraction with legends and scenic views from nearby hills.
