Liubča Castle
Lubcha, Belarus, Belarus
Liubča Castle in Lubcha, Belarus, was originally built in 1581 as a fortified residence for Jan Kiszka, a powerful Calvinist noble of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Initially, the castle had timber walls and a single stone entrance tower, surrounded by a deep moat on three sides and the Neman River on the fourth. Later, nobleman Janusz Radziwiłł expanded the castle substantially, adding three stone towers and strengthening its defenses with multiple levels of cannon and musket loopholes.
The castle played a significant military role but was severely damaged and partially destroyed by Cossack forces in 1655, after which it declined in military importance. Over centuries, it changed owners multiple times, and in the 19th century, a neo-Gothic palace was built on its grounds, which was largely destroyed during World War I.
In the mid-20th century, the site housed a school and later a local history museum, preserving its legacy. Since the early 2000s, restoration efforts led by volunteers and a charitable foundation have aimed at reviving the castle, turning it into an important cultural monument and tourist attraction in BelarusLiubča Castle.
