Ružany Palace
Ruzhany, Belarus, Belarus
Ružany Palace in Ruzhany, Belarus, was originally built as a castle in 1602 by Lew Sapieha, a prominent Lithuanian chancellor, as the main seat of the senior line of the Sapieha noble family.
The palace was designed as a defensive fortress with three towers, later transforming into a grand Neoclassical residence in the 1770s under Aleksander Michał Sapieha, with architect Jan Samuel Becker of Saxony setting the palace within a landscaped English park. The estate included a theatre, orangery, and other outbuildings.
Known as the "Belarusian Versailles," it showcased a blend of baroque and classicism, with interiors that housed a rich library, art gallery, and one of Europe's finest theaters.
The palace was confiscated after the 1831 uprising and later used as a textile mill, suffering extensive damage in both World Wars. Restoration efforts began in the 21st century, with parts of the palace, including the gate and eastern buildings, restored and opened as a museum dedicated to the Sapieha family and Belarusian artists. Despite ruin, Ružany Palace remains a majestic symbol of Belarus's aristocratic past and architectural heritage
