Laiuse Castle
Laiusevälja, Estonia, Estonia
Laiuse Castle ruins lie in Laiusevälja village, Jõgeva Parish, Estonia, marking the country's first fortress adapted for firearms use with cannon towers added in the mid-15th century.
Built by the Livonian Order in the late 14th century—first documented in 1406—on a trapezoidal plan amid a river bend and moat, it guarded eastern borders until Russian forces badly damaged it during the 1558 Livonian War.
Briefly Polish territory from 1582, it hosted Swedish King Charles XII's winter quarters in 1700-1701 before falling to ruin in the Great Northern War, now drawing visitors for historical reenactments and hikes.
