Toolse Fortress
Toolse, Estonia, Estonia
Toolse Fortress is a well-preserved medieval ruin on Estonia's northern coast near the village of Toolse, constructed by the Livonian Order in the late 14th century to safeguard a vital trade harbor and routes on Toolse Bay.
Completed before the 1558 Livonian War, this compact tower castle—Estonia's youngest and closest to the sea—featured a trapezoidal layout with a main tower house, outer ward, and strategic position once marking the Holy Roman Empire's northernmost outpost.
Passed through Russian, Polish, and Swedish hands amid conflicts, it was deliberately destroyed in 1702 during the Great Northern War to thwart invaders, now managed by Virumaa Museums with guided tours, adventure paths, pirate ship play areas, and treasure hunts amid scenic Baltic shores.
