Lake Balkhash

Balkhash, Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan

---

Lake Balkhash, located in southeastern Kazakhstan near the city of Balkhash, is one of Asia’s largest lakes and is famous for its unusual dual nature.

The western part of the lake contains mostly fresh water, while the eastern part is saline, a rare phenomenon caused by the inflow of the Ili River and the limited mixing of water between the two basins. Surrounded by steppe, desert, wetlands, and mountain landscapes, the lake supports diverse wildlife, including fish and numerous bird species. Its shores are popular for fishing, swimming, boating, and nature tourism, especially during the warmer months.

Lake Balkhash is an important natural and ecological landmark in Kazakhstan, but it also faces environmental challenges related to water use and changing inflows from its tributaries. Its unique mix of freshwater and saltwater ecosystems makes it one of the most distinctive lakes in the world.
