Lourdes is a historic town in the Hautes-Pyrénées region of southwestern France, with a population of about 13,000.

Nestled at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains, it is one of the world's most famous religious destinations and attracts millions of visitors each year. The town became internationally known in 1858 when a young girl, Bernadette Soubirous, reported a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle.

These events led to the creation of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, which is now one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Visitors come to Lourdes to see the grotto, attend religious services, and collect water from the spring associated with the apparitions.

The sanctuary includes several basilicas, chapels, and processional areas dedicated to prayer, reflection, and healing.
