Miesto Pevnosti Džigerdelen Parkan
Štúrovo, Slovakia, Slovakia
Miesto Pevnosti Džigerdelen Parkan refers to the site of a vanished Ottoman fortress near Štúrovo in southern Slovakia, built around 1546 as a strategic bridgehead opposite Esztergom (Gran) on the Danube's west bank. Named "Džigerdelen Parkan" by the Turks—meaning "fortress that cuts into the enemy's liver"—it was a square wooden palisade stronghold with terraced walls, deep moats on three sides, and river protection on the east, housing about 200 soldiers and serving as a base for raids during Ottoman-Hungarian wars. Repeatedly contested and damaged in battles like those in 1595, 1663, and 1683, it was ultimately destroyed in the late 17th century, with a Roman Catholic church now standing on the site.
